Photo Gallery: Shed time with the ACC Maintenance Team

We peek into the maintenance shed for a catch-up on this issue of Aspects!

Along with regular backcountry trips during winter months for hut maintenance, our team also spends time locally prepping for spring/summer. One of the projects included the replacement of several hut benches and tables. See below for some insight into the process, along with some images!

Pro tips when using the tables at the huts:

  • Wipe up spills as soon as you can

  • Don’t place anything too hot to touch directly on the table (use hot plates)

  • Let us know if you find any tables or benches that are loose, sticky, or have cloudy spots on the varnish, and we’ll take care of it :)

Secrets inside~

Always several projects on the go with the maintenance team.

All furniture starts with rough cut Douglas Fir 2x8” boards, which are first dry piled to lower moisture content to suitable levels for furniture building.

The boards are planned and jointed to be parallel and square on all sides. Then the most suitable boards are selected for the bench tops and tabletops.

Remaining boards are cut to build the frame of either the table or the bench.

The frames were then assembled together with mortise and tenon joints for durability and long-lasting pieces.

Before final assembly of the tops and frames, all surfaces were sanded.

Sand, sand, sand!

Following the assembly, the tables were finished with a varnish to keep moisture out.

Measure twice, cut once.

Easy does it.

Making dust.

Tada!
