Jacques Lake Cabin

Editor’s Note: It's always a great day when we roll out a NEW HUT! The ACC and Parks Canada are proud to announce that the patrol cabin at Jacques Lake in Jasper National Park has been opened for public enjoyment in winter.

Continue reading on for more info and images from the new hut, along with booking information!

A cozy warden cabin in the woods

The Jacques Lake Cabin was built in 1951 by Harvey Crate under the National Parks Program. It’s a classic log build, constructed with a utilitarian mindset. Because of its convenient location at the cross-section of several trails and campsites, the Warden Service occupied the cabin initially to monitor visitors and possible poachers. Since then, it has been the administrative cabin for the Rocky District Headquarters.

ACC upgrades and improvements to the Jacques Lake Cabin

The cabin features a rustic feel, sporting peeled spruce logs, an overhanging porch shelter, window shutters and a cookstove centre. During renovations, the ACC maintenance team kept the spirit of the cabin intact, and added several modern furnishings to make it suitable for recreation. We can go on about it, but you can see for yourself through the images below, along with a statement from the maintenance team:

The week at Jacques Lake was a tremendous amount of hard work in winter conditions but I absolutely enjoyed every minute of my time there. The lead contractor, James turned out to be a complete con artist; he magically made a week of very hard work seem like a party. Robson, the other professional carpenter was one of the most pleasant people I have ever been around and Barbara prepared delicious meals that allowed us to work without stopping from daylight until well after dark every day. By the end of the week, I was reluctant to say goodbye to these four wonderful people but we all left being satisfied that we had accomplished a beautiful renovation that will be enjoyed by backcountry users for generations to come.

New outhouse!

Propane available in the rear.

What’s in the area and what’s access like?

Access is relatively flat and the approach is follows a 12km trail that can be taken on skis or snowshoes. It’s worth nothing though, that this is a winter-only cabin and small parts of the approach trail do pass through avalanche paths. Check out the following map to see where the avalanche paths are:

The cabin is along the South Boundary Trail and the popular Jacques Lake Trail, so you can expect gorgeous views.

Who’s the cabin for?

The cabin’s a cozy one, sleeping eight people, so it’s quite nice for small groups and families who want a more private backcountry hut experience.

The cabin’s also a great option for those who primarily want a cozy hut as their destination on winter’s night.
