Calling all ice athletes: apply to join Team Canada today!

The ACC, because it is the member federation of the UIAA for Canada, is the national body responsible for licensing athletes for UIAA competitions. David Dornian is the chair of Ice Climbing Competition Canada, which is a committee of The Alpine Club of Canada.

Calling all ice athletes!

The Alpine Club of Canada is preparing to collect applications and information from those interested in competing for Team Canada at events on this year's UIAA Ice Climbing World Cup Calendar.

In particular, we want to hear from those athletes interested in the UIAA Ice Climbing World Championships scheduled for Edmonton, Alberta this coming February 16-18, 2024.

UIAA Ice Climbing is organized similarly to many other sports, with an international administration (the UIAA), that has national federation members (in Canada's case, this member federation is The Alpine Club of Canada). For world level competitions, the national federations license and register their athletes with the UIAA each competition season. Each country can enter a maximum of six men and six women in each competition category at each event.

Anticipating greater interest in the sport this winter because of the proximity of the World Championships in Edmonton, we'd like to hear from everyone who would like to compete for Canada's Ice Climbing Team.

Send your applications and expressions of interest to me, Dave Dornian, at ddornian@telus.net and tell me about yourself. Particularly, I would like to hear about your competition experience in the past (Lead or Speed), reference to any current or past UIAA rankings, and a brief climbing resume focussed on dry-tooling experience. I’d also like to know about your current training regimen.

To be licensed and compete this season, you will need to be a Canadian citizen (i.e. have a Canadian passport). You must also be a member of your national sport federation (The Alpine Club of Canada). There will be a number of declarations you will need to make and agreements you will need to undertake relating to doping control, athletic contracts, insurance, media permissions, etc. The buttons below link to a few representative documents that will give you an idea of what to expect.

Lastly, I would like to hear from everybody interested by December 15, 2023. This is not a first-come, first-served type of situation and there is a hard limit on the number of people we can register for any UIAA competition. We may have to arrange a qualifying event or find some other way to rank our athletes if there are too many applications. Know also that there will be an Open/Citizens competition in Edmonton if you don't think you'll be ready for WCH levels but would still like to compete.

I hope to hear from you soon,

Dave Dornian
