A New Roof for Kain Hut - Summer 2021

The Conrad Kain Hut in the Bugaboos got a major upgrade this past week, even if it’s not one that most guests will notice.

The ACC’s facilities maintenance team, along with a crew from Hilstad Roofing of Canmore, replaced the metal roofing on the entire hut, as well as a few windows while they were at it.

The crew stayed in the hut, as well at the Boulder Campground near the hut to make sure that everyone abided by BC provincial health regulations.

The new metal roof has a 25+ year lifespan so we shouldn’t have to do that job again for a while. The colour of the old roof was matched as close as possible. There’s a bit of extra material left over from the job and we’ll use that for the roof of the new outhouse that will be built at the Silver Spray Cabin in July.

A hut roof isn’t an obvious upgrade – it doesn’t add value or functionality for guests and for most people it will be unnoticeable. But as far as taking good care of backcountry huts, a roof is one of the most important features. The ACC is proud of our hut system and spends a lot of time, energy and money keeping them in good repair.

The Kain Hut opens tomorrow, and it is largely booked for the summer. There is one date available for September 29 and 30. The hut is closed during the winter.

The Boulder and Applebee Campgrounds are open for the summer and we’re expecting them to be busy. Spots are available on a first-come-first-served basis, with the Kain Hut custodians checking in and collecting camping fees. Rates are $10/night for adults and $5/night for children. More info is available at BC Parks website.

One last very important note: For all those visiting the Bugs this year (or visiting any area that has an ACC hut), please keep in mind that the use of the hut is for registered guests only. If you’re passing by on your way to go climbing, camping at Boulder or Applebee, or just up for the day, please refrain from going inside, even just to “poke your head in.” Provincial COVID protocols are in place for a reason and all those at the hut have taken care to abide by the rules and limit their group size. This is a big thanks from all of us for respecting the space of hut guests!
